Our Story

The Rowel Co. way

Modern Western isn't a costume. It's a culture.

Friday, a little after six. The tie comes off in the truck. The pearl snaps go on. Somewhere between the office and the porch, a man remembers who he is when nobody's billing him by the hour.

That is the West we care about. It lives in Fort Worth and in Marfa, on ranches and in apartments, at a feed store counter and at a wedding in a barn. It isn't nostalgia, and it isn't dress-up. It is a set of habits: show up, keep your word, take care of your gear, and set an extra chair.

Rowel Co. is a store built around those habits.

The Rowel Code

I. Earned, not costumed. We pick things you will actually wear: to work, to church, to the game, to the good seats. A hat that has seen weather beats a hat that has only seen a mirror.

II. Every maker has a name. Every piece in our shop comes from a named maker or brand, and we put that name on the product. You know whose work you are buying, and it ships direct from our partner.

III. Built to wear in. Felt, leather, silk and brass get better with use. We choose goods that look right in year five, not just on day one.

IV. Good company. To us, Western means the open gate and the extra plate. A lot of what we carry is made to be given, so we built a gift shop around it.

V. A Texas point of view. Everybody's welcome. We see things from here. You don't need a ranch address, a horse or a drawl to shop with us.

The name

A rowel is the small turning wheel at the back of a spur. It is a small part that does real work, and it is unmistakably Western. That is the standard we hold the store to.

What's next

Today we bring together goods from partner makers, and we tell you plainly what you are buying: material, size, maker and price. Over time we plan to add Rowel Originals, our own designs, made with the same attention.

What is a rowel?

The small rotating wheel on a spur. Its distinctive shape inspired our name and mark.
